COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Nathan Mollonee carded a 5-under 65 to take a two-shot lead after Wednesday's opening round of the 87th Southeastern Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Columbus.
Mollonee, a rising senior at Georgia State, had a run of five birdies in nine holes, starting on the third, to propel him to the top spot on the leader board.
Jake Kevorkian and Jonathan Keppler (Florida State) shot 67 (-3) to hold second place.
Five golfers, including Andy Ogletree (Georgia Tech) carded a 68 (-2), while Jared Bettcher of Auburn was part of a group at 69 (-1).
Play was halted twice in the opening round due to heavy rains that swept through the Columbus area. The first time play was held up for 20 minutes, with a 47 minute delay the second time.
It's not Mollonee's first time on a leaderboard in a tournament in Columbus. As a prep senior at Oglethorpe County, he was the medalist at the 2012 Hardaway Invitational, played at the Follow Me Course on post at Fort Benning.
Round two will get underway on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
