OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Officials are investigating after an Opelika man drowned Friday, June 24.
Early Friday afternoon, Opelika Police received a 911 call to a possible drowning at the Quality Inn on Columbus Parkway.
Upon arrival by Opelika Police and Opelika Rescue, they discovered 37-year-old Ricky Thornton on the bottom of the pool in the deep end.
He was pulled from the water and CPR immediately initiated.
EAMC EMS transported the victim to the emergency room at East Alabama Medical Center where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and Thornton was pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m. CDT.
According to reports, Thornton could have been under water for as long as 4-5 minutes before someone noticed something wrong and called 911.
No foul play is suspected and the incident is being treated as an accidental drowning. Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
The Opelika Police and Lee County Coroner are continuing the investigation.
