ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of an inmate's death inside the Elmore County Jail early Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Bill Franklin identified the deceased woman as 39-year-old Diana Marie Layne, a Pell City resident, who was arrested Friday and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

According to Franklin, Layne was in a cell by herself in an air conditioned area of the jail Wednesday morning. He said a staff member spoke with her at 6:07 a.m. Less than 20 minutes later at 6:22 a.m., she was found unresponsive.

"I believe the cause of death is drug related," Franklin said. The body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

The sheriff said Layne had several prior arrests in Elmore County, and had spent time in the same jail previously.

At the time of her death, Layne was incarcerated in connection to an arrest Friday night at the Windcreek Casino complex in Wetumpka. Investigators reported the woman had 22 morphine pills in her possession.

Tuesday night, the Central Alabama Drug Task Force made an additional arrest at the casino involving another man who had more than 100 similar-type pills, the sheriff said. That man, 36-year-old Selma resident Tyrone Woods, remains in the county jail on a drug trafficking charge.
