Barbasol Championship brings PGA Tour back to Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - It's tee time! The pros of golf are coming back to East Alabama this week!

The PGA Tour's Barbasol Championship returns to Opelika at the Robert Trent Jones Grand National beginning Monday with practice rounds teeing off at 7 a.m.

The Celebrity Pro-Am will be held Wednesday, July 13 and the tournament takes place Thursday, July 14 through Sunday, July 17.

Barbasol Championship tournament director Jonathan Romeo told News Leader 9 why he's so excited for this event, "It's a live commercial for this whole area to have this tournament on the Golf Channel, watching these guys play a course that anyone here can come out and play, and hopefully it will attract additional residents, businesses, and tourists to the area."

Former Auburn University golfer Michael Johnson and current Tiger Matt Gilchrest will be playing this week at the tournament. When asked about what it means to have local athletes hitting the course, Romeo added, "The SEC is not just a football conference. We have great golf too."

The South is known for football, but this week the Barbasol Championship will be a "hot" ticket in East Alabama.

Admission is $20 per person per day and tickets can be printed at home. Active and retired military, and children 15 and younger are free.
