SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - He was scheduled to arrive home on Tuesday from Afghanistan to visit family and friends, but instead the wife and mother of a local Army vet are making funeral arrangements.
Jonathon Adkins, 26, died while working as a civilian contractor after serving his country in the U.S. Army.
Army officials say Adkins died from an aneurysm to the heart.
His co-workers in Afghanistan participated in a departure ceremony at Kandahar Air Field on Monday, July 11.
Adkins' body is being flown to Delaware where his wife and mother are in route to meet him there.
Family members in Smiths Station say the body is expected to arrive in Alabama on Thursday and funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
