1821: Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest is born in Forrest Chapel, Tennessee.

1923: The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, California. It begins as a much longer sign, reading "Hollywoodland."

1928: Actor Bob Crane is born in Waterbury, Connecticut.

1942: Actor Harrison Ford is born in Chicago.

1985: The Live Aid benefit concert takes place in London and Philadelphia, with the goal of raising funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.

1993: NASCAR driver Davey Allison, 32, dies in Birmingham, Alabama from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash.

2010: New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dies in Tampa, Florida at the age of 80.
