1913: Comedian and actor Red Skelton is born in Vincennes, Indiana.

1944: General Hideki Tojo resigns as Prime Minister of Japan because of numerous setbacks in the war effort.

1954: Singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Ricky Skaggs is born in Cordell, Kentucky.

1969: Mary Jo Kopechne drowns when the car in which she is riding veers off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts. The driver, Sen. Edward Kennedy, survives.

1976: Romanian Nadia Comaneci becomes the first person in Olympic history to score a perfect 10 in gymnastics at the games in Montreal.

1989: Actress Rebecca Shaeffer, 21, is murdered at the doorstep of her Los Angeles apartment by an obsessed fan.

1999: David Cone pitches a perfect game on "Yogi Berra Day", as the Yankees blank the Expos 6-0.

2005: Army General William Westmoreland dies in Charleston, South Carolina at age 91.
