1824: Painter Edgar Degas is born in Paris.

1903: Italian-born French bicyclist Maurice-Francois Garin wins the inaugural Tour de France.

1966: Singer and actor Frank Sinatra, 50, makes news when he marries 20-year old actress Mia Farrow. They will divorce two years later.

1983: The first three-dimensional reconstruction of a human head in a CT scan is published.

1989: United Airlines Flight 232 crashes while attempting to land at Sioux City, Iowa with no hydraulics. Of the 296 people on board, 185 survive.

1996: Opening ceremonies are held for the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.

2014: Actor James Garner dies in Los Angeles at age 86.
