1864: Union troops under Gen. William T. Sherman defeat Confederate forces of Gen. John Bell Hood at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in suburban Atlanta.

1938: Actress Natalie Wood is born Natalia Zacharenko in San Francisco.

1944: German Führer Adolf Hitler survives an assassination attempt at his Wolf's Lair compound near the Russian border.

1969: Millions are watching as Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin make a successful lunar landing, then walk on the surface of the moon.

1973: Actor and martial artist Bruce Lee dies in Kowloong Tong, Hong Kong at age 32.

1976: Hank Aaron hits his 755th and final major league home run as the Brewers edge the Angels 6-2.

1980: Fashion model Gisele Bündchen is born in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

2015: The United States and Cuba resume full diplomatic relations after five decades.
