Even if you practice sun safety on a daily basis with sunscreen, ball caps and sunglasses you still need to do monthly skin exams at home. This is a quick scan of the skin to look over any moles, lesions or spots. There are several things

to look for during these exams. They are broken down in an easy ABCDE process. These are the things you should look for in any atypical moles or spots.
A – Asymmetry; draw a line through the spot and if the two sides don’t match is asymmetrical
B - Irregular Borders; if a mole is somewhat raised and feels uneven
C – Color; most normal moles are one color when a mole has several different colors it raises concern
D – Diameter; a diameter greater than six millimeters, roughly the size of a pencil eraser
E – Evolution; if a lesion changes over time
If you find a mole or spot with any of these characteristics you should schedule a visit with your dermatologist to get a closer look and exam.
