HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Animal Aid USA in Hinesville celebrated a nationwide pet adoption day on Saturday, Clear the Shelters Day.

The all-volunteer non-profit organization made an impressive effort to help animals get adopted Saturday, saving more than 330 animals from shelters in Georgia as part of the event.

The animals came from shelters in Liberty, Piece, Long, Murray and Laurens counties.

Animal Aid USA typically rescues around 250 dogs per trip from high-kill shelters in Georgia.

“Once you look into the eyes of these animals, you wouldn’t be human if you didn’t cry for them and what they’ve gone through,” said Meredith Vieira,  Animal Aid USA volunteer.

“Every 30 days we take the same route to Georgia,” states Karen Talbot, co-founder of Animal Aid USA.  “We rescue hundreds of dogs from county shelters who are on the euthanasia list, as well as dogs we see abandoned on the way.”

“If we weren’t doing this more than 90% of these dogs would be put down,” said Lorenzo Borghese, co-founder of Animal Aid USA. “All animals deserve to be loved, and I encourage others to visit their local shelters to save a life.”

To date, the group has rescued more than 14,000 dogs since it was founded in 2012.
