COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Two Columbus community groups came together to combat gun violence in the area by hosting a gun buy back initiative.
Results of the initiative were announced on Thursday. Muscogee County Marshal Greg Countryman said that they collected a total of 20 weapons including eight rifles, seven shotguns and five pistols. Two of those pistols came back as stolen.
"I'm not going to allow the gun dealers to come in to purchases these weapons because if we have a gun by that program, because the purpose is to take the guns off the streets," said Countryman.
Organizers say they plan to hold another similar buy-back, perhaps in collaboration with local law enforcement.
