AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Auburn running back Jovon Robinson was noticeably absent from the first practice of fall camp, and now we know why.
Turns out the senior will be permanently absent from the Tigers. Head coach Gus Malzahn announced he dismissed senior running back Jovon Robinson from the team Wednesday afternoon.
"He did not meet my standards or expectations for what it takes to be an Auburn Tiger football player," Malzahn said. "We're going to have zero distractions this year, I've given him his release and we wish him the best."
It's the third running back to leave the team this year. Peyton Barber declared for the NFL Draft, Roc Thomas transferred to Jacksonville State, and now Robinson.
This means guys like Kerryon Johnson and Kamryn Pettway will need to pick up the slack.
"We have very talented guys that are here, that are still here," Malzahn said. "We've been one of the better rushing teams in our league for six years and we'll continue to be that."
"We just have a lot of guys that's willing to step up and I think that's where we're going to go from there," senior wide receiver Marcus Davis said.
Davis said the team wasn't told why Robinson was dismissed. There were no hints from defensive end Carl Lawson either. Each question he was asked was answered with a simple phrase.
"He got dismissed today."
Amidst all the Robinson talk, Gus Malzahn did answer some other questions, mainly about the quarterbacks, saying they did a rotation of the three on the first day of camp, but there's no frontrunner so far as they get ready to take on Clemson at Jordan-Hare Stadium in one month on Sept. 3.
