WTVM Editorial 8/5/16: A+ for Phenix City Schools

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) – Kudos to the Phenix City School District for giving their high school students the option to use a Chromebook laptop this year instead of textbooks - making the backbreaking book bag a thing of the past.

Phenix City Schools has been leading the way in STEM education: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, helping students prepare for the high-tech jobs that will await them after high school and college.

Now the Chrome Books will help these students make the transition to college and beyond.

One of the best things about the Chrome Books - which are laptops with built-in Wi-Fi access - is that students who may not have access to a computer or internet at home won't be left behind.

That's because last year, Phenix City added more than 1,000 hot spots across the district to help students stay connected in all learning spaces.

And the Chromebook laptops don't require the internet to access textbooks and other off-line learning apps.

So, for some students at or near the poverty level, these laptops are a bridge over the digital divide between the haves and the have-nots.

Again we congratulate the Phenix City School District for being a true leader and investing heavily in local higher education.

We give them an A+!
