1939: The Wizard of Oz has its Hollywood premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

1965: Stadium rock is born when The Beatles play to an estimated crowd of 60,000 at Shea Stadium in New York.

1968: The actress Debra Messing is born in New York City.

1969: The three day music festival known as Woodstock begins on a dairy farm near Bethel, New York. An expected crowd of 50,000 swells to 400,000.

2015: Academic and politician Julian Bond dies in Fort Walton Beach, Florida at age 75.
