Opelika’s going through changes.
Quarterback Jake Bentley, a key member of last year’s region championship team, is gone to South Carolina. He turned heads in 2015 with 30 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards passing.
Now he’s gone, and there’s a new head of the pack:senior John David Worth steps in to fill the void.
“It’s exciting. I’ve been working hard just getting back,” Worth said.
Some may draw comparisons to Jake, but JD is ready for them.
“I mean I expect it. It’s just something you’ve got to learn to live with and just kind of go with it,” Worth said. “Me and are two different quarterbacks. He’s more of a pocket passer, I’m more of a scrambler, running type. I don’t really compare myself to Jake.”
Senior running back Weldrin Ford has known John David since 8th grade and thinks they’ll be just fine with JD.
“Both of them are great quarterbacks. John David doesn’t have the same strengths as Jake does, but I think he has some strengths in him,” Ford said.
JD played receiver last year, but played quarterback in 8th and 9th grade, so he’s no stranger to taking the snaps.
“It’s nothing really new for me,” Worth said.
He’s been waiting since freshman year to get the opportunity, and Friday’s his time to shine.
“I feel like I’m ready for it,” Worth said. “I’ve been ready for a long time.”
We’ll see how he handles the new role of lead Dawg come opening kickoff.
Opelika plays Carver in our Sports Overtime Game of the Week this Friday. Kickoff set for 8 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m. Central.
