1978: The three man crew aboard the Double Eagle II becomes the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a hot air balloon.

1979: Actress Vivian Vance dies in Belvedere, California at age 70.

1982: The first compact discs are released to the public in Germany.

1998: President Bill Clinton admits in taped testimony to an "improper physical relationship" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

2008: American swimmer Michael Phelps becomes the first person to win eight gold medals in one Olympic Games.
