1942: Actor, politician and lawyer Fred Thompson is born in Sheffield, Alabama.

1951: Standing 3 feet 7, performer Eddie Gaedel is hired to pinch hit for the St. Louis Browns in the second game of a doubleheader against Detroit. He walks on four pitches.

1965: Actress Kyra Sedgwick is born in New York City.

1972: NBC airs a musical variety special titled The Midnight Special which later becomes a regular series.

1977: Actor and comedian Groucho Marx dies in Los Angeles at age 86.

1980: "The Breaks", by Kurtis Blow, becomes the first gold record in the rap genre.

2009: Television producer Don Hewitt, 86, dies in Bridgehampton, New York.
