SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) – Community members gathered together Saturday to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Smiths Station Fire and Rescue.
Fifty years ago a couple of neighbors started Friendship Volunteer Fire Department with just a milk truck and used telephones for communication.
Now 50 years later, the Smiths Station Volunteer Fire & Rescue has 40 trained firefighters with many also certified as EMT's.
Smiths Station Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Sexton says, "We've been involved in thousands of fires and rescues of the last 50 years and we have been able to help out in a positive way and again thousands of people's lives and we are just happy to serve our community."
The department serves over 30,000 people and responds to over 2,300 calls a year.
