NC man arrested for drug trafficking in east AL

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – The Opelika Police Department arrested a North Carolina man on numerous charges, including drug trafficking on Aug. 26.

Dontae Newby, 32, of Middlesex, NC was arrested on Aug. 26 when he failed to stop for a traffic violation on I-85 NB near exit 60.

The 2001 Mercedes Newby was driving was pursued by Opelika Police for several miles, and police said Newby was throwing items out of the car before he surrendered.

Police later recovered the items, including a large number of ecstasy pills and a small amount of marijuana, both of which were also found in the car.

Newby was charged with the following:

  • drug trafficking
  • second- degree unlawful possession of marijuana
  • fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement
  • improper lane changes without signaling 

Newby was booked into the Lee County Jail.
