FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The Soldier’s Medal was awarded to a Fort Benning soldier for his heroic actions in 2014.

Staff Sergeant David Mensink from Seale, AL received the honor Thursday morning at Post.

He was called to Birmingham after a man had a grenade stuck in his leg.

Staff Sgt. Mensink was able to remove the explosive and save the man's life.

After the ceremony, he spoke about the high rate of suicide among soldiers and veterans, and how he too was impacted by war.

“I want to help anyone who feels alone, just that intense feeling and I want to be able to help them see the same thing, that you can move on from it,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Mensink served in Afghanistan and Iraq and worked in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
