COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - In an announcement made one day after Uber's launch in the Fountain City, officials at Fort Benning said that they and the ride-sharing service work on a post access agreement.

Officials on post said that Uber and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will work to establish an agreement similar to what they have with existing taxi companies in town.

The release says:

We’re uber excited that Uber has come to Columbus!

Fort Benning and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is confident Uber will soon be an asset to our military community on post and off. As always, we will move cautiously in the coming days to make sure drivers are thoroughly vetted for the safety of our community.

The contracting agency for taxi operations on Fort Benning is the MWR. They are working with post officials to make sure they comply with the security requirements of the installation before granting Uber drivers access to post as independent contractors, just as they do with individual taxi cab operators.

Essentially potential Uber drivers must pass a background check and their vehicles must be inspected before they can enter into a contract with MWR, and in turn they will receive approval to operate on post.

MWR looks forward to announcing a partnership with Uber very soon.
