UPDATE: Officials ID victim in Edmon Ave. murder in Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Police are investigating a murder on the 600 block of Edmon Avenue in Opelika on Tuesday.

OPD says the call came in around 12:44 p.m. CT and they found a 23-year-old male dead inside an apartment on Edmon Avenue. The victim has been identified as Jaquavious Strickland.

Strickland was the victim of a prior shooting incident on Sept. 15 at the same address. he did receive a gunshot wound to the head in that incident and was flown to Columbus Midtown Medical Center to receive treatment. He recovered from that wound and was recently released.

Strickland was found by a family member who had gone to the residence to check on him when he could not be contacted.

According to police, there have been multiple shooting incidents in the Edmon Avenue area over the last several years.

Further investigation into each of those incidents determined that the victims in each of those cases were specifically targeted. Therefore, it is not believed that the crimes occurring within that neighborhood are necessarily related to the neighborhood, but to those targeted victims specifically.

Strickland will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334)705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334)745-8665.
