(WTVM) - Two impressive women, with a powerful civil rights message, came together to make the 20th annual Columbus Urban League Equal Opportunity Gala an important and meaningful event for Columbus.

The two impressive women are local Urban League interim president and CEO Susan Cooper and Dr. Bernice King, youngest daughter of the most revered civil rights leader in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

They both demonstrate the kind of leadership we all need when it comes to highlighting equal opportunities for all.

The Urban League’s many projects under Susan Cooper include helping take care of the displaced tenants left homeless after the devastating fire on MLK Boulevard earlier this year and a successful summer jobs program.

Susan Cooper got Dr. Bernice King to appear as the featured speaker at the gala. Dr. King lent her vision to the Urban League Gala, recognizing progress since her father's time, but urging more must be made.

The Urban League's mission is to empower all people and help them find and use the right resources to have a better quality of life - that’s what Susan Cooper works for every day.
