COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Fort Valley State student from Columbus died early Wednesday morning in Warner Robins following a rollover car wreck.

Police say Gary Earl Johnson Jr., 24, died when his vehicle left the roadway, struck a speed limit sign and light pole before overturning.

Johnson was a Liberal Studies student and drum major, and was scheduled to graduate in December.

Dr. Donta Truss, vice provost for the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Management, called Johnson’s death tragic.

“Our campus community is mourning the loss of this dynamic, young man,” Truss said. “The loss is resonating across campus and has left our student body dismayed. At FVSU, we deeply feel every loss such as this because we are such a tight knit family. We have sent our condolences to the family and will be reaching out to inquire about how we can assist further.”

A vigil was held on campus for him Wednesday night.

“He was a very valuable member of the Wildcat family from his time in the band, also his contributions to other students,” said T. Ramon Stuart, FVSU Academic Affairs.

The accident is still under investigation.

Johnson leaves behind a son and pregnant wife.
