SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - The city of Smiths Station had a special surprise for outgoing mayor LaFaye Dellinger on Tuesday.
The city council honored Dellinger, the first and only mayor in the city's 15-year history, with a proclamation on Tuesday in anticipation of her retirement.
Alabama State Senator Gerald Dial was on hand to present the honor to Dellinger, who was totally unaware of the surprise.
"I know everybody in the community just about. It is a good community, has a good community spirit. The people here rally around the schools," Dellinger said. "You get to know everybody, the churches are great. I've been to most of the churches in the area."
Dellinger announced in June that she would not seek reelection.
Dellinger's last day will be Nov. 7 and will be replaced by Fred "Bubba" Copeland, who won the election to fill her seat.
