(WTVM) – Eight Afghan students training at U.S. facilities were reported absent without Leave or AWOL last month including two from Fort Benning. One of those Afghan students has been found.
The Afghan student who was reported AWOL was detained by the Canadian police after attempting to enter Canada from the United States.
A total of 25 Afghans were reported AWOL in 2015: so far this year a total of 20 have been reported AWOL including those 8 from September—now that's a total of 45.
Of the 45 AWOL Afghans, 32 have been located and according to the Department of Defense the remaining 13 have not yet been found.
The Afghans who were reported AWOL in September were in various stages of training when they left the training. The training included a variety of topics like intelligence, engineering, and Army Ranger training.
The Department of Defense is assessing ways to strengthen eligibility criteria for training in ways that will reduce the likelihood of an individual Afghan willingly flee from training in the U.S. and going AWOL.
