Chambers Co. kidnapping suspect unknowingly tries to hitch a ride with sheriff; later arrested

Search underway for a kidnapping suspect in Chambers Co.

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - Law enforcement officials in Chambers County say they have apprehended a suspect wanted in connection to a kidnapping that took place in Georgia on Monday.

David Blake Thaxton, 26, of LaGrange was arrested at 1276 County Road 286 in Five Point, AL around 7:30 pm CDT.

However, he almost was caught earlier in the day when he unknowingly tried to catch a ride with the Chambers County Sheriff.

Chambers County Sheriff Sid Lockhart said at about 2 p.m. he spotted a man, later identified as Thaxton, running down a dirt road.

Sheriff Lockhart, who was driving an unmarked pickup truck, slowed down as his vehicle approached him.

Thaxton asked for a ride, and Sheriff Lockhart said "yeah, jump in."

Suddenly, Thaxton realized he was talking to a law enforcement official in an unmarked vehicle and made a run for the woods.

Thaxton was arrested without incident five hours later when deputies and tracking dogs found him inside a house about a mile away.

The arrest was a combined effort between Lagrange Police, Chambers and Troup County Sheriff's Deputies.

He is charged with kidnapping and attempting to elude. His court date has not been released at this time.

Thaxton reportedly kidnapped an adult woman from the Red Roof Inn, located at 1601 Lafayette Pkwy. in LaGrange, as a result of a domestic dispute.

LaGrange Police Department Sgt. William Nelson says that the woman, at one point, jumped out of the vehicle near Forrest Avenue in LaGrange and screamed for help, prompting a passerby to call 911. Nelson said that Thaxton stopped the vehicle, put the woman back in the car and continued into Alabama.

Once they crossed the Georgia-Alabama line, Nelson said that Thaxton fled the car with the woman still inside, and ran into a nearby wooded area.

Officials from the LaGrange Police Department, Troup County Sheriff's Office, and the Chambers County Sheriff's Office searched for Thaxton in the wooded area for three-and-a-half hours and called off the search when an official with the Chambers County Sheriff's Department spotted Thaxton, who retreated back into the woods.

This is a developing story; check back for more updates.
