SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers was in Smiths Station to present Mayor LaFaye Dellinger with a proclamation in recognition of her service to the city as its first and only mayor.
The ceremony took place Tuesday afternoon at the Smiths Station Government Center.
After the ceremony, a retirement party was held to celebrate her service.
Mayor Dellinger is stepping down after 15 years on Nov. 7 when Bubba Copeland will take office.
She says she has mixed feeling about no longer being the mayor.
"It is bittersweet very much," Dellinger said. "It is not something I look forward to at the beginning, but now I am looking forward to it."
"We have grown to be good friends over the last 14 years," added Rogers. "When I was first running for office she had just become mayor the city had just been formed one year before that. We hit off right off the bat."
Dellinger says she will be advising Mayor-elect Copland when he takes office next month.
