COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A Columbus man has successfully qualified for the world's largest event in food sports – the World Food Championships.
Luther Echols will be competing for a $300,000 prize and the title of the 2016 World Food Champion in Orange Beach, AL from Nov. 9 – Nov. 15.
Echols' team is one of the 430 from across the world who will be seeking the ultimate food crown. He won the chance to compete at WFC by winning the "Bringing Home the Bacon" competition in Dothan, AL in September.
As a result, he will now have a shot at a major payday at WFC, where $100,000 is awarded for the best dish overall and $10,000 will be awarded in nine different categories including barbecue, chili, dessert, bacon, sandwich, seafood, burger, steak and recipe.
"Winning my category would be an incredible feat," said Echols. But winning the whole tournament with the best dish? That would be a dream comes true!"
You can cheer on Mr. Echols by following him on Facebook or following the results at worldfoodchampionships.com.
