Fort Benning soldiers compete for Department of Defense Warrior games

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Fort Benning soldiers are taking their first steps to qualify for the annual Department of Defense Warrior games.

Regional trials are being held on Post and in Columbus this week. Soldier-athletes are competing in eight sporting events including archery, shooting, swimming and track and field.

Participants include those with amputations, spinal cord injuries, visual injuries, visual impairments, traumatic brain injuries and serious illnesses.

Those who succeed in the regional trials have a chance to make it to the games in Chicago.

"The great thing about our Regional Trials and adaptive reconditioning is that with adaptive reconditioning; all of our soldiers- wounded, ill and injured the opportunity to discover a new norm… new abilities," said CSM Matthew Brady with the Department of Defense Warrior Games.

Wednesday's track and field trials started at 9 a.m. and field events are continuing at Lake Bottom Park.
