COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A lot of empty shelves and fast approaching holidays have Valley Rescue Mission volunteers ramping up collection efforts.

The organization is collecting food items along with other things like toiletries and blankets to keep people warm and fed throughout the year, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas inching closer.

Valley Rescue Mission administrators say they feed about 1,000 people on both major holidays and are beginning to prepare now.

“The closer we get to Thanksgiving and Christmas, those numbers tend to increase,” said Mitzi Oxford with Valley Rescue Mission. “Like, last year, from the year before, we had like a 30 percent increase in people coming to us in need of food bags, and a variety of other help.”

In addition to family and food items, Valley Rescue Mission also accepts money to directly purchase goods for their Thanksgiving and Christmas outreach programs
