Fire officials remind residents to check smoke detectors for Daylight Saving Time

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - It's almost time to fall back by setting your clocks an hour behind for Daylight Saving Time.

When you reset your clock, it's also a good time to check some safety devices in your house.

Ahead of setting your clock on Sunday, Fire Marshal Ricky Shores with the Columbus Fire Department says this is also the perfect time check your smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.

"Columbus is not immune to what happens nationwide as what happens as a result with fire, which is why we encourage our citizens and make sure that they understand that it is imperative to check they their smoke detectors," Fire Marshal Shores said. "We also recommend they change the smoke detector in their home to make sure it's working properly every 10 years."

Fire Marshal Shores also recommends you change batteries in your smoke detector if it's less than 10 years old.
