Columbus churches collect gifts for 'Operation Christmas Child'

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Two local churches are working to make this a happy Christmas for millions of kids.

Gentian Baptist Church in Columbus and Lakewood Baptist in Phenix City are partnering with Samaritan's Purse.

On Monday, they kicked off its national collection week for operation Christmas Child. They're looking to collect more than one million shoeboxes.

"What comes in these shoe boxes are the necessities they might need- like soap and wash clothes and a toothbrush. But then we also try to put in these that they might want like toys that are age appropriate for them. We also include school supplies for the older children. And so it's just some things that touch both areas of their lives," said Linda Keown with Lakewood Baptist Church.

Samaritan's Purse hopes to give shoeboxes to 12 million children within 150 countries.
