FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) – Peaceful protesters gathered at the gates of Fort Benning Saturday afternoon calling for justice and accountability for the former School of the Americas, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.

About 20 people were on site at the stone gate entrance of Fort Benning demanding the closure of WHINSEC.

After the demonstration at Fort Benning, crowds will go the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin Saturday evening with the Interreligious Task Force on the Americas to demand an end to the incarceration of migrants.

The annual demonstrations and protests from SOA Watch come after six Jesuit priests, their co-worker and her teenage daughter were killed in El Salvador on Nov. 16, 1989, by trainees from the School of the Americas at Fort Benning.
