AMERICUS, GA (WTVM) – Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees have sent a flower arrangement to the family of a fallen Americus police officer.

The Americus Police Department posted to Facebook Saturday morning showing flowers have been sent to the family of fallen officer Nicholas Smarr from the Yankees.

Officer Smarr will be laid to rest Sunday, Dec.11. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at the Georgia Southwestern State University Storm Dome in Americus.

Smarr's family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Nick Smarr Trust Fund at Sumter Bank & Trust.

Smarr, 25, was shot and killed on Dec. 7 while responding to a domestic dispute in Americus. According to family, Officer Smarr died while administering CPR to his friend and fellow officer Jody Smith, who had been shot, despite being wounded.

Smith, 25, was sent to a Macon hospital, but also died from his injuries a day later. His funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Smarr and Smith were good friends from high school and attended the police academy together and had been roommates. Both men were set to be married to their respective fiancees in the next few months.
