Monday kicks off Georgia’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Each day of this week is dedicated to a different topic that informs the public on severe weather preparedness.

Monday covers Family Preparedness and the importance of a NOAA Weather Radio.

  • The first step is to know the hazards that affects your area. Here in Georgia and Alabama we are prone to seeing many types of severe weather like tornadoes, flooding and thunderstorms to snow and ice.
  • Have a way to get watches and warnings during a severe weather event. A NOAA Weather Radio is the best way to do that.
  • The key benefit is that the alert system will wake you up in the middle of the night if there are watches or warnings in your specific area. Make sure that kids are informed of the plan.
  • The best way to teach all members of the family is to practice your family emergency plan. Prepare a disaster kit that includes food, water, flashlights, batteries, medicines and copies of important family documents.

Another way to get watches and warnings is through a severe weather text service available by texting wtvm and your “county name” with no spaces to 24247. For more information

For more information on NOAA Weather Radio’s visit the Weather Radio page. There you can also find a list of dates Storm Team 9 will be holding weather radio programming events in preparation for the upcoming severe weather season.
