COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police have confirmed that 31-year-old Christopher Warden, a soldier stationed at Fort Benning was shot after he broke into an apartment on Armour Avenue.
On Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at approximately 7:19 AM, the 911 center received a call about someone trying to break into an apartment in the Armour Landing Apartments at 3929 Armour Avenue.
Warden beat and kicked the door and eventually broke out a front window and crawled into an apartment, which he thought was where his wife had gone to pick up her daughter.
He was warned by his friend that they were at the wrong apartment and a neighbor also told him that he was at the wrong apartment and that he would call 911 if he didn't leave.
Both of the friends and the neighbor called 911, but even after the neighbor tried to pull him out of the broken window, he persisted and entered the apartment.
Inside the apartment, the victim, hearing the commotion and seeing a stranger inside her apartment, armed herself and yelled at the subject to get out of her apartment.
Warden refused and advanced into her bedroom where she fired a pistol one time into his chest. The victim then called 911 for help. EMS and police were dispatched and arrived at 7:25 a.m.
Warden was taken to the Medical Center where he died a shortly after.
Based on evidence at the scene of this burglary and testimony from the witnesses, no charges will be filed against the victim.
