SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) -

A Lee County organization held a 5K for a good cause on Saturday.

The organization ARISE hosted the “ARISE and Run” 5K in Smiths Station to raise money and support teacher grants for the Lee County school system.

ARISE, which stands for Alliance for Recognition of Innovations in School Excellence, is made up completely of volunteers dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for Lee County students.

Teachers at Saturday’s event say the funds raised by this group are crucial to offering students educational opportunities that are not funded by the state.

"We get iPads, document cameras, we get actual centers that we can put in students’ hands and they can work independently or collaboratively in groups," said Erin Redden, a teacher at Beauregard High School.

If you missed the event, you can still donate to help support the teacher grants at their website here.
