COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A car accident has claimed the lives of two children in Columbus on Saturday.

According to the Muscogee County coroner, 6-year-old Juliana Taperia and 13-year-old Jose Taperia, who were cousins, were pronounced dead at Midtown Medical Center following a single-vehicle accident on I-185 N near Victory Drive.

A total of eight children and two adults were in the Chevy Trailblazer heading east on Victory Drive when the vehicle hit a guard rail and the embankment and then rolled down the hill multiple times.

The possible cause of the accident was an excessive rate of speed. No one was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The I-185 ramp from Victory Drive to the northbound I-185 lane has been closed off, and traffic is being diverted through the checkpoint at Fort Benning.

This is a developing story; check back for more updates.
