COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A group of students from Spencer High School woke up bright and early Saturday to put their creative talents to work.

The students helped paint a large mural along the MLK Jr. Outdoor Trail in Columbus.

Organizers from Turn Around Columbus organized the project working to refurbish and offer visual appeal to passing cars along MLK boulevard.

Famed artist, Ronald McDowell, who's worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and other famed celebrities was brought in to assist in the painting.

McDowell says he was honored to have a part in the project.

"Doing portraits for movie stars was one thing, it paid the rent, but doing something historical, in historical Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, which are all the states I have public works in, it gives me more of a sense of fulfillment," said Professor Ronald McDowell with Tuskegee University.

Local artist Steven Short has been working on the mural since March 2016 and expects it to be completed in the coming weeks.
