EXCLUSIVE: Columbus driver arrested for hit-and-run says accident was a misunderstanding

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - News Leader 9 is speaking exclusively with the driver involved in what Columbus police are reporting as an alleged hit and run accident involving a three-year-old child.

Police say the accident happened Saturday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. in the Palms Apartment complex on Double Churches Road.

It was initially reported that the three-year-old involved did not suffer injuries from the incident. However, hours later the child was taken in for medical treatment by their guardian.

Police arrested the driver 39-year-old Adam Comstock on charges of leaving the scene of an accident.

Comstock says he does not know if his vehicle struck the child, explaining the entire situation is a misunderstanding

"Out of the corner of my eye I saw a child with no adult supervision run across the parking lot and I slammed my brakes, I put the vehicle in park and got out. My main thing was to make sure the child was okay. I mean God forbid if anything happened I would be devastated," Comstock said.

Comstock says he spoke with the child's grandmother after the incident to make sure the child was okay before leaving the scene.

Comstock was released from the Muscogee county jail the same day of his arrest and will be due in state court within the next six weeks.
