OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Have you ever wondered what happens to items recovered by police that aren't claimed?

After collecting hundreds of items like this Opelika Police Department is getting rid of them with the help of local bargain hunters.

Opelika Police Chief, John McEachern, says over the last several years his department has collected more than 400 recovered and abandoned items.

Today the department held an auction to get rid of those things.

Hundreds of people made their way to Police Headquarters hoping to make the top bid on everything from car parts to bikes and even clothing.

Most of the items were recovered in shoplifting or other cases officers and investigators have worked.

With space running out in their evidence locker this was necessary.

It has been five years since Opelika Police held an auction such as this one.
