COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Just one playoff spot remains in the SPHL, and the Columbus Cottonmouths took one more step toward clinching it.
Behind a strong third period, the Snakes pulled off a 4-3 victory in overtime over 9th-place Roanoke to move further ahead in 8th in the standings.
Jonathan Turk, the reigning league Player of the Week, started off the scoring, getting the Snakes up 1-0 in the 1st. Roanoke responded with two goals in the period to take a 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless 2nd period, the Snakes came out swinging, as Scott Milnthorp scored just 1:05 into the 3rd to tie it up. Keegan Bruce responded just six minutes later to put the Snakes on top 3-2.
Roanoke didn't go down easy, as they put one in the net just 9:27 into the third to tie things up at three. After both teams failed to score the rest of the way, they went to overtime.
Columbus went straight to work in OT, as Chad Brears scored the game winner just 1:12 into the extra period, giving the Snakes their fifth win in their last six games.
Now they're four points up on the Rail Yard Dawgs with five games to play. Columbus gets back on the ice Tuesday, March 28th against the Mississippi RiverKings.
