DADEVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett has confirmed that one person died and another was critically injured in a plane crash that happened around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday near Dadeville. State and county law enforcement officials, as well as agents with the FAA, are on the scene.

Abbett said 66-year-old Jeannette Carol Currier was killed in the crash. Her husband, 67-year-old David Lee Currier, is in critical condition at a Columbus, Georgia hospital.

The wreckage is spread out over a 75-yard area near Slaughter's Crossing Road, approximately 300 yards behind the industrial park off of U.S. Highway 280. Once on the scene, investigators found the wreckage of a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, Abbett explained.

"The terrain presented a tremendous challenge," Abbett added. "We had Forestry in there to cut roads, so we're waiting for them to get here to go down and do their thing."

The sheriff said Mrs. Currier died on the scene. Her husband was airlifted by state helicopter.

Abbett said the couple was flying from Enterprise, Alabama, to Sparta, Tennessee. He said Mr. Currier is a retired military veteran.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The Alexander City Outlook reported that ALEA helicopters dropped people to the site.
