COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – The director of the House of Mercy in Columbus is warning of people using the organization to scam people.

Johanne Harris says people are going around, asking for cash saying it is on behalf of the non-profit organization, by saying the House of Mercy is in bad shape.

Harris says this is not the case at all and the organization would never approach a person and ask for cash.

"I want everyone to pay attention. Please do not give anybody any cash because the House of Mercy does not do business that way. What we do is we write donor letters when we are in need. We write thank you letters for whatever check or money order we receive to help us out. We do not have people on the street soliciting," said Johanne Harris, Owner of House of Mercy.

Police are aware of the situation, but Harris urges anyone who believes this is happening to them to contact police.
