House of Mercy of Columbus owner cautions public of scam

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A large crowd gathered in front of the House of Mercy as they held their Mega "Five" Giveaway for anyone in need of some personal items.

With a picture ID in hand, anyone was able to receive items ranging from home furniture, blankets and even food for your pantry only requiring you have a box or bag to take your items home with you.

House of Mercy owner, Johanne Harris wants the public to be aware of a scam.

She says people are going around asking for cash on behalf of the non-profit organization.

They're getting people to give them money by saying the House of Mercy is in bad shape.

Harris says that's not how they operate at all.

You are asked to call the police if this happens to you. They are already aware of this situation.

You will know if this is happening if they approach you and ask for cash.

One of the people that is asking for cash is claiming to be the owner's nephew.

Harris, says, "I want everyone to pay attention. Please do not give anybody any cash because the House of Mercy does not do business that way. What we do is write donor letters when we are in need. We write thank you letters for whatever check or money order we receive to help us out. We do not have people on the street soliciting."
