Parents notified after student makes threat over social media at Northside High School

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A student made a threat over social media at Northside High School on Thursday.

According to the school, it was reported to the police department immediately, and they have handled the situation.

At 3:15 p.m. Thursday, a picture was posted on social media and air-dropped to a school intern's iPad. The picture depicted a 16-year-old NHS student standing by a lake with the caption stating: "When you thinking about shooting up the school because people laughing at you."

The parents of the student in the picture were notified about the post. The parents confirmed that the student in the picture has not had his phone in three weeks and the child denied any involvement. It has been discovered that the photo was taken by another student several weeks ago, according to MCSD security.

"Be assured that the faculty and staff have taken every precaution to ensure the safety of your child," said Assistant Principal Nila Burt said in a release to parents.

The school is encouraging parents to use this situation as an opportunity to speak to your child about the appropriate uses of social media.
