Update: collapsed RiverWalk construction to start in May

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A 64-foot section of the RiverWalk collapsed last January due to heavy rain and flooding.

The section that collapsed lies between The National Civil War Naval Museum and bulldog bait and tackle.

A detour has been set up around the affected area.

Columbus Water Works says they will send out for proposals for repairs on April 28.

Contractors will return the bids on May 25.

Vice President of Columbus Water Works, Vic Burchfield, says once a bid is accepted, they hope to start construction mid-summer or late fall.

Vic Burchfield, Vice President of Columbus Water Works, says, “The key competent here is the Columbus Water Works has a 54-inch sewer line underneath that portion of the Riverwalk. So, it is very critical that embankment does not wash away again.”

Burchfield says repairs to the collapsed section of the Riverwalk should be completed by the end of the year.
