(WTVM) - When out in the field soldiers are often carrying more than 30 pounds of equipment.
Starting next year, the U.S. Army is pushing forward with efforts to lighten the load for men and women in the infantry.
It's a vest and helmet gear, according to the Army, that will be five pounds lighter but will keep soldiers just as safe.
Developers say the vest will provide the same area of coverage as current equipment but will be less bulky around the shoulders.
The helmet resembles a motorcycle helmet with a visor and the option to add on other items.
The gear is currently under development at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
